I first invited Chris Stuart & Backcountry to play Great Falls in February 2004, but our son's need for surgery forced us to cancel the show on pretty short notice. Chris & Ivan and their booking agent Mary Brabec could have been upset with me, but instead they all expressed concern and support for our boy. Well, John came through the surgery just fine and has had a complete recovery, so it was especially sweet to have our son at this show enjoying every note of the evening. These are some mighty fine musicians and equally fine human beings. Sometimes I wish I could find the magic words that would push someone over the edge so they'd run right out and buy the CD, but so far I've just had to rely on people trusting my taste in music, and I guess that'll have to be the case here too. But if you love what you hear in this concert, I hope you'll also go out and buy one or more of the following: * Chris Stuart - Angels Of Mineral Springs (2002) * Chris Stuart & Backcountry - Saints & Strangers (2003) * Chris Stuart & Backcountry - Mojave River (2004) @ http://www.ChrisStuart.com * Ivan Rosenberg - Back To The Pasture (2002) * Ivan Rosenberg - The Lost Coast (a while back) @ http://www.IvanRosenberg.com They're all great CDs and if you take my word on that it'll do my heart good to know that I've helped put a few more well-deserved dollar bills in the pockets of these terrific musicians. Trust me on this one, folks -- I think you'll be very glad you did. THE STORY OF THE SHOW We usually do Stone Soup Productions shows at Center Stage Theater, but this time the theater was getting ready for a play so we had to decide: not book the show or do it somewhere else... and if so, where??? "Well, there's this little church -- hey, we know the pastors! ;^{)}=>+ -- and maybe, just maybe..." Well, we could and we did, and it was a very fine evening. You hear lots of church references in the show, some of them visual, but it's still kind of funny, especially when Chris refers to the hymnboard as not being the evening's setlist. The other reference that probably needs a bit of explanation is Chris & Ivan's mention of The Sip'n'Dip Lounge, a local tiki bar (Montana's only... well, duh!) to which we always take bands after the show. (It's one of those establishments that just has to be experienced to be fully understood.) Chris asked, "Can you say Sip'n'Dip in a church?" and Tony Lucas, our soundman, pointed out that mentioning The Sip'n'Dip was most appropriate in a church where we share Communion (sip) and baptize (dip). Good one, Tony. (chuckle...) Come to a Stone Soup show one of these days and you can join us after the show at the one & only Sip'n'Dip Lounge, Great Falls Montana's true claim to musical fame! Come hear Piano Pat who's been at the keyboards for the last 41 years! Come see Jerry Douglas' autograph on the bar-pool window! Come see Darryl Hannah's autograph that she signed after swimming in a mermaid suit in the same pool. (And you can find out what her favorite beer is too!) It's all waiting for you at The (Infamous) Sip'n'Dip Lounge... Anyway, the show took place in our church with the band up in the chancel area and about 75 very responsive people in the audience. Aaron Parrett (a local singer-songwriter, University of Great Falls professor, and a veteran of the band The Judge & The Jury) opened the show with Ivan on dobro & Mason on mandolin. Due to a recording glitch only three of the five songs they played made it to tape. Aaron & I are working on a Montana Singer- Songwriter Showcase in the near future. Chris & Janet came up as Aaron left the 'stage,' and in a matter of minutes the rest of the show was on. (The show speaks for itself.) The acoustics in the room were wonderful and warm, and a lot of credit also goes to Tony Lucas, the local attorney, mando player, and sound tech guy who mixes all my Stone Soup shows. (Thank you, Tony!) As you'll hear it was a great evening of music and there was lots of banter between the band and audience. Chris told me after the show that he's a strong supporter of taping & trading live music, so it seems only appropriate to offer this one up for others to enjoy. If this is your first taste of CS&B, look for them on the road, check out the websites (above), & please buy a CD. Bottom line: anyone who sings a song like "Sin Stealer" can preach in our church any day of the week! ;^{)}=>+ ENJOY! "It's all Pastor Tim's fault...!" I'll take the blame at StoneSoupGreatFalls at yahoo.com Stone Soup Productions is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit community arts group dedicated to bringing fine acoustic music to Great Falls, Montana. All the money raised at these shows goes directly to the musicians themselves... because they deserve it!
