OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the first and only time that I have seen Doc Watson, and I loved the show. He played some of my favorites, ’Give Me Back My 15 Cents’, Make me Down A Pallet’,’Ready For The Times To Get Better’, and ’Shady Grove’, among others. I was second row center, thanks to my friend Dave who got me the ticket. I drove down to Santa Barbara by myself and met up with Dave at the show, who got there a little late. You can hear me whisper too him, ‘Nice of you to make it’, a few minutes into the show when he arrived. Dave had gone down with his friend Rick to see another show in Los Angeles and was getting a ride back to SLO County with me, as Rick was living in Santa Barbara at the time. I am thankful to Dennis Orr for working his magic on this recording with his wonderful post production skills. I stealth recorded this show with my Nakamichi CM-300 cardioids hidden in my Levi jacket, and the microphones picked up a lot of applause noise which Dennis minimized. I had holes sewn into the bottom of each front pocket on the Levi jacket, and used hollowed-out 35 mm film can lids over the the microphone bodies to keep the weight of the mics from falling through to the pockets. I used short custom-made XLR connectors to connect the mics to my Sony DAT recorder, but this set up necessitated the microphones to be pointing straight up, with only the capsules sticking out of the pockets. Hence, the crowd noise. I had long hair in those days that I used to wear down to cover the capsules with so they were invisible. Because it was a semi quiet acoustic show, the crowd noise (applause), while not excessive, was loud because of the angle of the microphones. (This set up worked best when sitting as close to the PA / stage as possible, because the mics really couldn’t be aimed.) I thought for years that the recording would be forever flawed, because the applause was so loud, but Dennis was able to correct it. I know for a fact that no soundboard of this show exists, (don’t ask me how), so this may be the only recording available from this night.
