Doc Watson with Richard Watson & David Holt 10-11-2008 @ "Diana Wortham Theatre" Asheville, NC Dunebilly recordings- Recording #3 Recorded from center balcony, Row B, Seat 0103 with Edirol R-09HR @ 24/48Hz. Edirol R-09HR> Hard disk> Hard limit & normalization via Cool Edit Pro. Sample rate conversion/dither performed via WaveLab> SBE verification & flac performed via TLC. This was a very challenging show to record. I had a very difficult time setting the levels. The first minute & a half is very low, then it kicks in right at the 1:30 mark. There are a couple quick cracks as I adjust the levels, but after that, everything is fine for the rest of the show. This was my first time recording in a big theatre setting, so I wasn't sure what to do about the loud applause. In hindsight, I probably should have began rolling during the beginning announcements & when the applause began for the performers I should have set my levels according to that. I think it would have made the editing process much more easy. What I ended up doing in the end with both sets 1 & 2 was applying a -3dB limit & then normalized both sets with Cool Edit Pro to -6dB. This seemed to take the sting out of the very loud applause in between songs & stories. There was a lot of interesting stories, so I gave them titles & split them accordingly into tracks. Doc's voice is soft, so you still may need to turn up the volume to hear the stories. There were a few songs performed here, that I don't think were ever performed live. One I know for sure was "Bye Bye Blues". I've never seen nor heard this song on any official or unofficial release of Docs. Also David mentions that it's a song that Doc usually plays off stage. The song "Little Log Cabin", by Fiddlin' John Carson, is another that may have not ever been performed live by Doc. Also, "Train That Carried My Girl to Town" is another old mountain tune that I was not familiar with. Also there are some gospel tunes on set 2 that may have not ever been performed live, especially the one that Doc said he learned from his Grandmother. There were 2 shows played on this day. The first, being the "early" show, which I was at began at 3pm & then there was a "late" show that began around 6 or 7 pm. This was an interactive program. There was a slide show behind the artists that I believe was being run off of a laptop that was in front of David. As they played & talked images were projected behind them of Doc at very early stages in his life. Also shown were images of various, mountain musicians whom inspired both Doc & David. I've seen Doc once before, however this show felt deeply personal. I'm not sure if it was because he was comfortable playing "at home", but Doc talked about his father, & about how he missed Merle & about his wife whom he's been married to for 62 years! He talked about being blind & what "true faith" really is. The stories & information here are priceless. Doc talks about the origins of different songs & different styles of pickin'. Also Doc told a very interesting story about the first time he saw someone make a slide out of a glass bottle! The sentiment here is very heart felt & Docs knowledge of music folklore is extremely facinating. I couldn't help but tear up a few times during the show. I had goosebumps throughout the performance. It was indeed very moving.
