Dry Branch Fire Squad In thirty-plus years of making music, Dry Branch Fire Squad has become an institution in American acoustic music and a perennial favorite at Hardly Strictly. I had been looking forward to this for months as work has been extremely busy. These shows were first days off in ten weeks. I was in touch with two friends and all three of us had made plans to get the spot. I was up at 4AM, out the door at 4:30 and as I approached Golden Gate Park at 5AM I receive a text and a call that Banjo Stage blankets were down. I found parking, took photographs in case I got towed again and walked in, On my way to Banjo Stage I put down a perfectly placed blanket at Arrow Stage. I meet both friends and decide the usual left of trashcans spot was good to go. Its the ideal spot despite the occassional klinking of beer bottles. As usual, lots of familiar faces and the morning flew by. Shortly before the music was set to start I went back to Arrow Stage. I had never seen Bill Kirchen and really enjoyed the set. After Bill Kirchen was Buckwheat Zydeco and they were fun. I had planned to stay at Arrow for HorrayFor The Riff Raff but the John Prine and Dry Branch Squad switched times due to a cancelled flight. That meant switching over to Banjo sooner. Dry Branch Squad was interesting. Not a banch I would usually see but I enjoyed the set. Next was John Prine and he was great. The show ended with Ryan Adams. I enjoyed the music but some of his talking between songs was a bit odd. All in all a great day and a nice set of recordings.
