Ray was a fixture for many years at WTJU, best known in Charlottesville for his two hour bluegrass program, "The Old Home Place", which immediately preceded the Prism's 8 o'clock first set broadcast every Saturday night. A man of incredible kindness, deep faith and unimpeachable musical taste, his show was one of the most popular on WTJU's calendar for years. His broadcasts were invariably soulful and uplifting, and he would end each one with a heartfelt benediction, exhorting the audience to go to church the following morning, saying, "You'll be glad you did." Two years ago Ray finally succumbed to the passage of years, leaving a gaping hole in the collective soul of WTJU's DJs, listeners and staff. Charlottesville's _The Hook_ called his death "The worst loss for local bluegrass". The grief in the community was enormous and palpable, and he will be sorely missed.
