Second Annual Roanoke Bluegrass Festival Cantrell's Horse Farm, Fincastle, VA September 2-4, 1966 While bluegrass aficionados currently have the option of attending one of hundreds of bluegrass festivals organized around the world in any given year, this was not the state of affairs in the early-mid 1960's. At that time bluegrass music was appreciated by a relatively small but dedicated group of fans, and music-park shows typically co-mingled bluegrass and country groups on the same bill. Visionary Carlton Haney (1928-2011) pioneered the concept of the bluegrass festival when he promoted the very first multi-day, all-bluegrass festival over Labor Day weekend in 1965-The Roanoke Bluegrass Festival at Cantrell's Farm in Fincastle, VA. At this inaugural event, Haney introduced the idea of the "Bluegrass Story" focused around the father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe; by featuring Monroe performing with many well-known Blue Grass Boys who tenured with him, as well as other performers who helped develop the music along with Monroe, Haney offered attendees a historical overview of the development of the genre and a chance to hear their favorite performers in aggregations that had never existed before. What a treat! With the rousing success of his first Roanoke festival, Haney was empowered to produce round two a year later, and he just kept on going as his festival concept took hold. Without Haney's inspiration, bluegrass festivals as we know them today would not exist. The Steam Powered Preservation Society is extremely proud to present an extensive set of reel-to-reel recordings of the Second Annual Roanoke Bluegrass Festival, Cantrell's Farm, Fincastle, VA, September 2-4, 1966, made by the festival soundman Denzel "Silver Spur" Ragsdale, who also worked sound at Monroe's Brown County Jamboree. These recordings include fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and guitar workshops, on-stage one-of-a-kind jam sessions, concert performances, as well as the "Bluegrass Story, Part Two"; to call these recordings "historic" simply does not do them justice. We are sure that any bluegrass fan will simply flip when they see even a partial list of performers-a veritable "who's who" of bluegrass stars: Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys (with Peter Rowan, Richard Greene, Lamar Grier, & James Monroe), Kenny Baker, Don Reno & His Tennessee Cut-Ups, Red Smiley & The Bluegrass Cut-Ups, a Reno & Smiley reunion, Jim & Jesse McReynolds & The Virginia Boys, the Osborne Brothers, the Country Gentlemen, Clyde Moody, David Grisman, Larry Richardson (an unsung pioneer of three-finger banjo picking), Mac Wiseman, Ronnie Reno, Clarence "Tater" Tate, Fred Pike (a little known hot guitar flatpicker when he wasn't playing banjo), "Sammy" Bush (14 years of age and tearing it up on the fiddle!), Del McCoury & The Shady Valley Boys, Benny Martin, and many more! Enjoy! Very special thanks to Richard Russell for providing SPPS digital copies of the tapes which were made from reel copies made in 1975 from the original masters by Steve Duckett, whose father was in possession of the tapes. --Mitchell Wittenberg, SPPS Tape Historian DISC 1: Friday Mandolin Workshop (Led by David Grisman) With Jesse McReynolds, Ronnie Reno, Clarence "Tater" Tate, & David Grisman Second Annual Roanoke Bluegrass Festival Cantrell's Horse Farm, Fincastle, VA September 2, 1966 Ronnie Reno: 1.
