The Wing and the Wheel (Griffith) ================================== Live from London’s Mermaid Theatre, Paul Gambaccini invites listeners to spend the evening in the company of American singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith. Nanci has successfully crossed the boundaries of country and folk music. Dubbed “the queen of folkabilly” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Nanci was born on 6 July 1954 in Seguin, Texas. Her mother dabbled in amateur dramatics and her father was a publisher and sang in a barbershop quartet. He would later provide backing vocals on one of Nanci’s early albums. The artist has penned such classics a Gulf Coast Highway (as recorded by Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson), Love at the Five and Dime (a hit for Kathy Mattea) and Outbound Plane (a hit for Suzy Boggus) Nanci herself was the first to record Julie Gold’s classic, From A Distance, which has been used to awaken astronauts on US Space Shuttle missions. She has been honoured with five Grammy Award nominations, three as a solo artist (winning for Other Voices, Other Rooms) and twice for performances on albums by The Chieftains. Tonight, Nanci performs songs old and new, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler.
