It was noon on Saturday as RTT played the first of their three festival sets, two of which took place on the smaller Family Stage that was only about 3 feet high. About 250 people were sitting on the warm grass in the shade of large pines as the band played, and you can clearly hear the laughter of children and comments from the fans in this fine stage recording. One of the nice surprises during this set was discovering that Martha's parents had showed up for the weekend; John & Dorothy stayed towards the back of the crowd in the shade of a large lilac bush, and more than once we were 'shushed' as our friendly conversations grew a little 'too loud'. This intimate "hour" of music got shortened a bit because the previous group of young dancers had run a bit long, but it was a great way to start an entire weekend in the park! Late Set Story (by Pastor Tim): The late-afternoon sun was sliding down behind the trees of Lindley Park in Bozeman as Reeltime played their second set of the festival on the Main Stage. Because the play "On Golden Pond" was taking place on a nearby stage the start of this set was also delayed, but RTT took it in stride and made the most of their hour in front of about 2000 people sprawled in lawnchairs and on blankets on the hillsides of the natural amphitheater. A couple-hundred devoted dancers 'rode the (very high) rail' and gave a lot of energy back to the musicians; the children in particular were dancing up a storm! The setlist includes an oblique reference to a "Tater Pig" (a hollowed-out potato steamed with a large sausage stuck through the middle of it), and while this delicacy came up in conversation with the band on more than one occasion during the course of the weekend, no one ever actually admitted to eating one. The band was clearly prepared to play an encore, and the crowd clearly expected one (just listen to the shouts at the end of the set), but the stage manager felt the festival had to get back on schedule and we got our second shortened set of the day. (grumble...) Still, how can you complain when such a perfect day ends with such a beautiful set of music? Note: Because it was a windy evening and RTT didn't have a windscreen for their regular single-mic, Leigh MacKenzie offered his mics & windscreens not just for the recording but as the mic'ing for the entire PA. This is likely the first-ever stereo-imaged recording of Reeltime Travelers, and believe me when I say Leigh was grinning from ear to ear.
