I walked into the grangehall-like Blue Heron before doors to set up my recording gear and wondered if people would turn out on such a hot evening, but an hour later the place was packed and it felt like a giant house concert -- everyone knew each other and the band knew everyone too! Turns out Martha and Thomas had spent quite a lot of time in Missoula in the past, and their friends were out to welcome them back in fine style. The band was only about 6-inches off the floor, and it was quite a mix as some music-lovers sat on the floor up close to watch the strings, dancers made room all around the perimeter to stomp and sashay, and a few folks just couldn't figure out where to stand and ended up leaning on the bar along one side, bobbing their heads in time to the music. At one point just before the show I stopped Martha and asked her if she'd be willing to take a look at some lyrics for me. She graciously asked if I could wait til after the show and I realized she thought I fancied myself a songwriter, but what I actually had was a transcription I'd made of her lyrics to Hallelujah and I just wanted to see if I'd gotten all the words right. We both laughed over that, she made a couple of minor corrections, and to this day I cherish that piece of paper as the beginning of our friendship. You don't meet many of the finest songwriters on their way up, but she's certainly one I'll be listening to for the rest of my life. There are lots of little sub-stories that take place in the course of this evening, but it's better to listen to them in Reeltime than to have me try and retell them in print. Suffice to say, Reeltime Travelers made a LOT of friends in Montana on this run and we were always happy to welcome them back to Big Sky Country. ENJOY! + Pastor Tim -- May 8, 2009 Please support the bands that encourage the recording and free sharing of their live performances by getting out and buying (but never burning!) their commercial releases. As far as I know you can still purchase copies of the band's two CDs: Reeltime Oldtime String Band Music (2000) and Livin' Reeltime Thinkin' Old-Time (2002), though Amazon only carries the latter.
