According to the intro every time he plays RockyGrass, this is the one and only time each year Sam plays with a pure bluegrass configuration - though this time he included a snare drummer, a change from previous years. I prefer the band without the drummer, but the snare didn't detract as much as I thought it would from the more bluegrassy style than his usual, more rock-tinged sound. Also in contrast to RG years past, Sam didn't close out the night, but instead preceded the closer, Alison Krauss & Union Station. Didn't seem to bother Sam much, aside from not being able to do 30+ minutes of encore. FWIW, I recorded this one with Schoeps MK21/KC5/CMC6 > V3, though I prefer this source better. Not as solid sound quality as the AKUS recording from the same night, but still mighty fine!
