Anonymous Collection 1 Cassette #165 was recorded at the Buckhorn Mountain Bluegrass Festival, Tazewell, VA, 

July 8, 1978, and features sets by 1) Jimmy Martin & The Sunny Mountain Boys (Jimmy Martin-guitar, Billy 

Smith-guitar, Dave Ratcliffe-mandolin, Terry Smith-bass, & Kenny Ingram-banjo) and 2) James Monroe & The 

Midnight Ramblers (James Monroe-guitar, Alan O'Bryant-banjo, James Bryan-fiddle, & David Bowlin-bass). It is 

interesting to note that the Sunny Mountain Boys heard here are an almost completely different aggregation than 

the group that backed Martin just several weeks earlier at Lester Flatt's Mount Pilot Bluegrass Festival 

(Tim Murphy-fiddle, Harold Davis-mandolin, Gloria Bell-bass, & Kenny Ingram-banjo; see Cassette #153).  

Midnight Rambler, Alan O'Bryant, is best known for his role in forming the Nashville Bluegrass Band, while 

James Bryan played fiddle with Norman Blake for many years and recorded several fine LPs of his own on the 

Rounder label.  Notably, Larry Sledge (another Norman Blake compatriot), who played mandolin with James Monroe 

several weeks earlier than this show at Bean Blossom (see Cassette #132), is missing from the Midnight Rambler 

line-up found here.
