Rawhide (James Monroe & The Midnight Ramblers-late set) Notes: Anonymous Collection 1 Cassette #166 was recorded at the Buckhorn Mountain Bluegrass Festival, Tazewell, VA, July 8, 1978, and features sets by 1) Jimmy Martin & The Sunny Mountain Boys (Jimmy Martin-guitar, Billy Smith-guitar, Dave Ratcliffe-mandolin, Terry Smith-bass, Kenny Ingram-banjo, & Lisa Martin-vocals) and 2) James Monroe & the Midnight Ramblers (James Monroe-guitar, Alan O'Bryant-banjo, James Bryan-fiddle, & David Bowlin-bass); O'Bryant later went on to found the famed Nashville Bluegrass Band, while Bryan subsequently fiddled with Norman Blake as part of the Rising Fawn String Ensemble in the early 1980's while also recording several acclaimed LPs of his own for Rounder Records. It is interesting to note that the Sunny Mountain Boys heard here are an almost completely different aggregation than the group that backed Martin just several weeks earlier at Lester Flatt's Mount Pilot Bluegrass Festival (Tim Murphy-fiddle, Harold Davis-mandolin, Gloria Bell-bass, Kenny Ingram-banjo; see Cassette #153). Notably, Larry Sledge (another Norman Blake compatriot), who played mandolin with James Monroe several weeks earlier than this show at Bean Blossom (see Cassette #132), is missing from the Midnight Rambler line-up found here. --Mitchell Wittenberg
