SPPS Anonymous Cassette Tape #366 Bluegrass Album Band The Birchmere Alexandria, Virginia July 8, 1982 "The Bluegrass Album Band was a bluegrass supergroup, founded by Tony Rice and J. D. Crowe in 1980. Originally, there was no intention to build a permanent group and the main reason for the collaboration was to record a solo album for Tony Rice. They found that this cooperation could work and the result was an album called The Bluegrass Album, released in 1981, with 5 more volumes of music to follow." - Wikipedia (citing: Stephen Thomas Erlewine; Biography of The Bluegrass Album Band, AllMusic). SPPS Anonymous Cassette Tape #366 takes us back to July 8, 1982 at the legendary Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia for two audience-recorded sets of the Bluegrass Album Band featuring Tony Rice (guitar, vocals), J.D. Crowe (banjo, vocals), Doyle Lawson (mandolin, vocals), Terry Baucom (fiddle, vocals) (replacing Bobby Hicks for this show), and Todd Phillips (bass). At the time of this recording the band had released their first LP, “The Bluegrass Album” (1981), and “The Bluegrass Album, Volume Two” was set to be released by Rounder at any moment. Bluegrass doesn’t get much better than this! There are simply too many highlights to list, but one that caused me a serious case of chicken-skin was “The Model Church” during set two. Sweet! —Mitchell Wittenberg
