Seldom Scene June 23, 1991 Sunday Gospel Set (Seldom Scene first gospel set ever) Telluride Bluegrass Festival Telluride, Colorado At Telluride I taped the Grateful Dead in 1987. The Fairgrounds are huge and I set up as close a I could get center behind the sound board w/ NAK CM-100 w/ CP-4 shotguns (atop a 20' stand) > Tascam Porta-1 4 Track Casette (in DBX). I patched the D-6 out of a battery powered ghetto blaster (speakers detached) w/ RCA stereo outs and rabbit ear antenae to try for the FM broadcast. (got local FM broadcast, to far from the board to pic up Healys' FM signal. To make a long story short the audio recordings of both days sucked. I imagine had we been able to get twice a close as we were they would have turned out okay. I think I got one set in two days FM that didn't have static in places. So anyway I decided to craft a better way to tape at Telluride. They didn't have a tapers tent at the 1991 Bluegrass Fest., and even today the recordings coming out of that tent w/ excellent rigs don't sound that great to me. I had a friend help me make an adapter for my Sennheiser 441 cord from 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo. I set up way back on the lawn 15-20' behind a PA stack. The stacks way back were sending out a mono signal. They were so far apart stereo made little sense. I called my method piping the stack. Simple and stealthy with not much gear to get past security and a rig that can tape from a secure spot on the blanket. Sennheiser 441 > D-6 (Dolby C) Audio CD created and tracked: NAK-CR2 > Harmon Kardon CDR-2 (?? been a while) Ripped and extracted Wave 16 bit w/ EAC Flac level 6 created w/ TLH 1.
