Bill Cheatum Tut Taylor Archive Reel #34 features several different recordings that heavily feature the Bluegrass Five, a fine bluegrass band from north Georgia who were some of Tut's close pickin' partners. These recordings were made circa-1967/1968; the Bluegrass Five at that time included J.N. & Onie Baxter (guitars/vocals), Hughie Wylie (mandolin), Ron Norman (banjo), and Howard McGuire (bass). Side A of this tape is labeled "Tut with Ron", and features some great banjo from Ron Norman. Side B is said to be recordings of the Bluegrass Five in Santa Monica, CA in 1967/1968; while there is some live Bluegrass Five to be found, side B also contains some hot solo banjo pickin', likely by Ron Norman. --Mitchell Wittenberg The tape is a 7.5 inch per second mono recording. The reel was played on a modified Revox A77 reel-to-reel machine with a Reutelhuber custom designed and built tape head preamplifier incorporating 2003 era technology and components including all metal film resistors, polypropelene coupling capacitors, and low ESR electrolytic supply bypass capacitors. The resulting analog signal was digitized by a Mytek Digital 8X96 analog to digital converter using Steinberg Nuendo as the recording software and saved as a 24 bit 48 kHz wave file. Post processing and was done by David Avery with Nuendo using the following Waves Plugins: Q10, X-Hum, S1 Stereoimager and L2. The file was dithered down to a 16 bit/44.1kHz wave file.
