Toy Heart Notes: Tut Taylor Archive Reel #040-Unknown Tut Taylor Archive Reel #40 is a prototypic tape from the Tut Collection-a mix of a variety of different recordings that criss-cross the musical map. Side A begins with several circa mid-1960's recordings of Tut in the company of unknown others; ÒWestgateÓ (track 2) and ÒDobro CountryÓ are marvelous. These songs are followed by a two-tune edit from a Flatt & Scruggs live performance (gotta love the Martha White Flour coupon plug!), and by two songs featuring Tut and, I believe, The Kentucky Colonels. Tut then joins Rosalie Sorrels and Bruce ÒUtahÓ Phillips for several songs that are also found on Archive Reel #43. The tail end of Side A and the first portion of Side B feature an unknown bluegrass group in a live setting, followed by several nice but all too brief tunes highlighting Tut's mandolin prowess (Side B, tracks 8-10). Side B is rounded out by some more bluegrass recordings with Tut on Dobro from what sound like different recording sessions. All in all, Reel #40 shows us the breadth of Tut's musical interests and Dobro and mandolin talents. --Mitchell Wittenberg Tut Taylor & Unknown Others/Mandolin Tunes (8-10) Tut Taylor--Various Unknown Bluegrass (11-14) Side A: Tut Taylor & Unknown Others (1-3) Flatt & Scruggs Live (4) Tut Taylor & The Kentucky Colonels (?)(5-6) Tut Taylor & Rosalie Sorrels (7-10) Tut Taylor & Bruce ÒUtahÓ Phillips (11-12) Unknown Bluegrass (13) Various Unknown Locations Circa mid-1960's: Side B: Unknown Bluegrass (1-7) Various Unknown Locations Circa mid-1960's
