Tut Taylor Archive Reel #062 Side B is purported, based on its labeling, to have been recorded at a 1968 DJ Convention in Nashville, TN. However, the tape actually contains two 'A.J. Jackson Show' radio broadcasts recorded in the Smyrna/Douglasville area of Georgia circa mid-1960's. The first show recorded features Tut's friends from the Bluegrass Five, Ron Norman (banjo) and Hughie Wylie (mandolin) along with Gene Jackson (guitar) and Kenneth Hood (bass). Norman is clearly the star of the show with his hot banjo picking that finds a nice balance between Earl Scrugg's traditional approach and the jazzier style of Don Reno. The second broadcast also features Norman and Wylie, along with future New Grass Revivalist-to-be, Curtis Burch, on Dobro, and famed Georgia bandleader and guitarist, Walter Butler. Whereas the first show was completely recorded in the radio studio, a number of the tunes played during the second show were recorded elsewhere. I had a hard time catching the names of some of the local artists featured. --Mitchell Wittenberg
